Chanel Pre-Fall 2011 Collection

It takes a queen to make an empress.

Uncle Karl goes off the beaten path:

"The season's theme, Paris-Byzance, Lagerfeld explained, was inspired by the Empress Theodora and the lost culture of Byzantium. In typically rapid-fire mode, he noted: "Theodora was a circus artist who became empress, like Chanel, who was a little singer and became a fashion empress."

There is no one, except maybe Andre Leon Talley, we can rely on more than Karl Lagerfeld for beautifully weird, hilariously self-important fashion pronouncements like the above. On the other hand, we fully support turning to Byzantine empresses for inspiration, because the endless recycling of the decades of the 20th Century is as worn out as the lining of Andre's favorite caftan. Granted, the result of this side trip to Constantinople seems curiously close to swinging '60s London, but still. It's an intriguing and unusual starting point and it clearly allowed him some room to explore colors, shapes, and textures. The styling's a bit opressive, but the individual pieces are gorgeous. J'ADORE the boot/leggings.
